Jim was born in Oakland in 1948 and still lives in the family home. He attended Berkeley for undergrad and for law school. He completed a clerkship under Judge Shockey and spent most of that time writing opinions and order drafts. After that he went to work for Matthew Bender a law publishing firm. He worked there until he retired in 1994.
He lived with and helped his mother until she died in 2001. He now spends his time working on his book that he hopes to have published soon. Jim has donated to CARE multiple times each year since 1979. He has also named CARE as a beneficiary of his perpetual trust.
